LANSDALE, Pa – On Friday morning, North Penn’s top offensive weapon, Matthew Pownall, announced his commitment to the U.S. Naval Academy via his social media accounts.
Pownall, often described as North Penn’s Swiss Army knife, tallied over 1,500 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns during his junior season, sparking interest from college programs.
“My recruiting process really started after my junior season, and I would have schools coming in to see me,” Pownall said. “Navy would be the first school to offer me, and then Army, a week later. My recruiting process started to pick up in February and went up from there.”
During his junior campaign, Pownall earned first-team all-league honors on both offense and defense while taking home North Penn’s team MVP. As a versatile playmaker, he drew attention from several coaches, but for Powell, Navy stood out.
Ultimately, his decision to attend the Naval Academy went beyond football. Pownall said Navy offers an opportunity to grow as a person and prepare for life after the game.
“I want to meet their standards as a man. I want to play high level of football and have an impact on the field,” Pownall said. “Then find out what I want to do in life and serve.”
With his recruitment complete, Pownall now shifts his focus to his senior season and a push for a District 1 championship.
