Bensalem Overpowers Abington In Turnover Filled Win

The Owls looked to bounce back after a close loss to Pennridge in week 2, and they certainly did. The Owls' defensive line dominated the Ghosts. I mentioned that this game was “turnover-filled”. That might be the biggest understatement I’ve ever made. There were a total of 7 turnovers in this game, with 4 going in favor of Bensalem and 3 in favor of Abington.

The game started off with the Owls running back the opening kickoff, only for it to be called back for a penalty. After a touchdown pass, Bensalem took a 6-0 lead. Later in the half, the Ghosts would get the ball in the red zone. Bensalem’s defense, however, held firm and kept Abington to a field goal. After more fumbles, the Ghosts would return the favor and have the Fighting Owls to a field goal to make the score 9-3. After a Bensalem fumble, defensive stop, and bugs invading Schwarzman Stadium, the Owls scored to make it 17-3. The second half was pretty uneventful outside of a Bensalem touchdown to bring the score to 24-3 and a late Abington touchdown to get us to our final score of 24-11 Bensalem.

I spoke with Bensalem’s coach about the win.

Me: What are your thoughts on the win?

Coach Houston: Really glad that we were able to pull out the win against a tough Abington team.  We made some mistakes that we have to clean up in practice but glad we notched the win.

Me: What are your thoughts on the offense’s performance?

Coach Houston:Our offense was able to score enough points for us to win.  We ran the ball pretty effectively but we have to find a way to improve our passing attack as the season progresses.

Me: What are your thoughts on the defense’s performance?

Coach Houston:Defensively, we really got after them, led by a great effort from our defensive line.  Fundamentals win so we are excited about getting back to practice.

I then spoke with Abington’s Head Coach, Bruce Fleming  on the loss.

Me: What would you say the primary reason for the loss was?

Coach Fleming: Tonight was a series of unfortunate events in all 3 phases of the game. We weren’t ourselves tonight and we have to grow from this game.

Me: How can the offense bounce back?

Coach Fleming: On offense we have to get better upfront to establish the run game.

Me: How can the defense bounce back?

Coach Fleming: On defense we need to get our alignments together. I preach to our guys alignment, assignment, and tackling. We get back to basics.

Bensalem will take on Quakertown at home in week 4, while Abington travels to Doylestown to take on C.B.West
