CB West Wins CB Cup, Earns Share of SOL National Title With 41-14 Win Over CB East

DOYLESTOWN — Central Bucks West entered Friday night knowing there was only one part of the equation it could control.

Beat Central Bucks East.

The Bucks took care of that in convincing fashion.

CB West jumped on its rival early, controlled the line of scrimmage and closed the regular season with a 41-14 victory over CB East at War Memorial Field.

The win gave West the CB Cup, and the night got even better when word came in that CB South had defeated previously unbeaten Pennridge, 21-14.

That result left CB West, Pennridge and CB South sharing the SOL National Conference championship.

For West head coach Rob Rowan, the formula Friday night was simple.

“Execution beats emotion.”

Rowan said the Bucks were challenged throughout the week to be precise while playing a physical brand of football.

That showed almost immediately.

Cape sets the tone

CB East opened the game with the football and moved into West territory, but the Patriots’ opening possession ended with a fumble at the Bucks’ 37-yard line.

West needed just one offensive snap to capitalize.

Senior Braylen Cape broke free for a 61-yard touchdown run with 10:55 remaining in the first quarter, immediately putting the Bucks in front.

Cape would go on to finish the night with 19 carries for 155 yards and two touchdowns, leading a West rushing attack that East struggled to contain throughout the game.

The Patriots responded with their best sustained drive of the opening half, marching to the West 18-yard line.

They came away empty.

West stopped East on fourth-and-2, and the Bucks’ offense went back to work.

Bucks break it open

Quarterback Josh George didn’t have to put the ball in the air often, but when he did, he made it count.

George connected with Shane McCuen for a 24-yard touchdown, extending West’s advantage early in the second quarter.

Then came another explosive play.

Junior running back Finn Riley broke loose for a 46-yard touchdown run, pushing the Bucks further in front.

West struck through the air again before halftime when George found Ashton Stass for a 24-yard touchdown with 1:54 remaining in the second quarter.

CB East finally answered late in the half.

Senior Tommy Seiler ripped off a 35-yard touchdown run with 1:34 remaining, but West still took a commanding 27-7 lead into halftime.

The Bucks had already rushed for 188 yards in the opening half, with Cape accounting for 93 of them.

West defense answers every challenge

East came out of halftime aggressively, recovering an onside kick and immediately taking possession in West territory.

The Patriots drove to the Bucks’ 30-yard line.

They were stopped on fourth down.

On East’s next possession, the Patriots crossed midfield again.

Once again, West’s defense got off the field.

That became one of the biggest stories of the night.

East was able to move the football at different points, but West repeatedly made the stop when it mattered.

Senior linebacker Nick Miletto helped lead that effort from the middle of the Bucks defense.

West eventually put together one of its most impressive possessions of the game, starting at its own 4-yard line and driving 96 yards.

Cape and Riley continued to pound away on the ground before George connected with McCuen to keep the drive moving.

Miletto finished it himself, powering in from 16 yards out with 8:53 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Cape would add his second rushing touchdown of the night as West continued to pull away.

East added a late rushing touchdown with 1:38 remaining, but the outcome had long since been decided.

CB West 41, CB East 14.

Physicality wins the night

When Cape was asked afterward what West did particularly well, he didn’t hesitate.

“Just physicality.”

Cape credited West’s offensive and defensive fronts, saying the Bucks were able to consistently move East off the football while the linebackers stayed disciplined and filled their gaps.

Cape’s final line reflected that physical approach. 19 carries. 155 yards. Two touchdowns.

Riley added 86 rushing yards and a touchdown on the plays charted by Suburban One Insider, while Miletto contributed 58 rushing yards and a touchdown offensively.

George finished 3-of-5 passing for 55 yards and two touchdowns in SOI’s game chart.

“We were just focused in the game,” George said. “We got to play hard 100% every single play.”

George didn’t need big passing numbers.

West’s ground game was doing the heavy lifting, and when the Bucks did go to the air, George capitalized.

Next man up

West’s performance was even more impressive considering the Bucks were without senior playmaker Louie Cipollo.

It didn’t change the approach.

Rowan called it a “next man mentality” and credited his coaching staff with developing players throughout the program so they are ready when their opportunity comes.

“You never know when your number is going to get called,” Rowan said.

Friday night was another example of West’s depth.

Cape carried the load.

Riley provided another explosive option out of the backfield.

McCuen and Stass caught touchdown passes.

Miletto impacted the game on both sides of the football.

And Mason Darrows made his presence felt in the special-teams phase as West put together a complete performance.

The CB Cup belongs to West

There was hardware waiting for the Bucks at the end of the night.

With its win over East, West secured the CB Cup, putting the finishing touch on another successful regular season.

But the celebration grew when the result from the Pennridge-CB South game became known.

CB South had beaten Pennridge, 21-14.

West had a share of the SOL National Conference championship.

For several members of West’s senior class, that meant a little more.

Miletto said afterward that he had gone his first three seasons without winning a championship at West.

“I know we shared it, but I mean, we still won,” Miletto said. “It’s all good emotions.”

Darrows pointed to everything that went into reaching this moment.

“We worked all season since December, past 11 months for this,” Darrows said. “This is what we play for.”

Rowan was equally proud of the group.

“These guys deserve everything,” Rowan said. “These guys work so hard.” He called himself grateful to coach them and said the players deserved every bit of what they had earned.

The next goal

The Bucks can celebrate the CB Cup.

They can celebrate a share of the SOL National title.

But West made it clear Friday night that it doesn’t view either as the finish line.

The postseason is next.

And George was pretty clear about what the Bucks want now.

“We want that district championship,” George said. “Every single person on our team is coming for it all.”

Rowan echoed that mindset.

West is proud of what it accomplished during the regular season.

But the Bucks aren’t satisfied.

They’re staying hungry.
