Conrad Weiser Scouts @ Abington Ghosts
900 Highland Ave, Abington PA
Team Details:
Conrad Weiser Scouts
Head Coach: Alan Moyer
League: Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3, PIAA 5A
Last season: 10-1 overall, 6-0 conference
Last game: Lost 42-7 To Bishop Mcdevitt (Playoffs- District 3 5A quarterfinals)
Scouts Notables:
Conrad’s 2024 season was historic for the program, going undefeated in the regular season. They lost some key players like leading receiver Evan Rittle and sack leader Ashton Kiebach. Despite that, they still return a strong core including Javien Rivera, who led the Scouts in touchdowns last season, and interception leader Dylan Parr. I talked with Coach Moyer on what to expect.
Me: What expectations should the fans have for the offense this week?
Coach Moyer: We are very raw offensively. We only return 3 starters on offense. New QB replacing a 3 year starter. Will attempt to run the ball. We have two returning offensive linemen, #56 Nate Gilfert and #64 Cody Sayers.
Me: What should fans expect from the defense this week?
Coach Moyer: We return 4 starters, but the rest are new. Have some athletic kids on defense and they can fly around. Will be difficult defending Abington’s deep ball threats. DL, #77 Eugene Booth anchors the D-Line.
Me: Last season Conrad’s record was 10-1 with a 6-0 conference record. What should fans expect to be the same or different this season?
Coach Moyer: Will be difficult to run the table in section 3. Very tough competition. We are a mid level 4A school who moves up to 5A because of a co-op agreement with a school that only provides us with one player this season!
Me: Who do you select as this week’s player spotlight?
Coach Moyer: 6’2 280 pound defensive lineman Eugene Booth. All section 1st team defense last season. Has worked hard to get better in the offseason. Expect him to draw a lot of double teams at the line of scrimmage to free up our linebacking core.
Coach: Bruce Fleming
League: Suburban One League National Division, PIAA 6A
Record 1-9 overall, 0-7 conference
Last game: Lost 44-7 to North Penn
Ghosts notables:
Abington’s 2024 season was one to move on from, excluding a highlight win vs Harry S. Truman High School, where the Ghosts clinched a win on a blocked field goal. Abington enters the 2025 season without sack leader John Wright and receiver Brayden Davis. I spoke with 2nd year head coach Bruce Fleming on what to expect in this game.
Me: What should the fans expect from the offense this week?
Coach Fleming: Fans should expect an offense with big play ability and show vast improvement from last season
Me: What expectations should the fans have for the defense this week?
Coach Fleming: The defense should show the fans a strong group that is consistent in stopping the run and limiting big plays in the pass game
Me: Last season, Abington’s record was 1-9 with a 0-7 record in conference play. What’s different this season?
Coach Fleming: Last season was a tough go, but we started to see some signs of group development towards the end. This year, with a full offseason, we have established a culture within the program that everyone pushes and holds each other accountable to follow it.
Me: Who do you select to be this week’s preview player?
Coach Fleming: Player to preview this week is Lineman Saadir Wimbush. Controlling the line of scrimmage is key to winning the game. I reached out to Saadir and asked him some questions about the Friday matchup.
Me: Last season Abington Finished 1-9. What’s different for you and your team heading into the season and this game?
Saadir: Everyone on our team has put themselves through a lot of pain this summer for this exact moment, pushing each other to our limits to change the narrative around Abington Football.
Me: What’s your prediction for the game?
Saadir: I have faith in our team to come out with the win and leave it all on the field
Me: Do you have a pregame tradition?
Saadir: My pregame tradition is to get a really good stretch in and I always eat fruit before the game.
